Westchester Graduate College Textbook Scholarship

Fl. Devron Wilson & 2008 scholarship recipient Jelani Worrell

In 2006, the Westchester Graduate Chapter of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc. formed a college textbook scholarship program.  Headed by Fellowman Devron Wilson, the program was designed to alleviate some of the financial hardships facing college men by supplying one qualified student per year with monies (of $500 to $1,000) toward the purchase of his first-semester college textbooks.  The winner of the scholarship is chosen from a pool of applicants who display great academic achievement and a firm commitment to the Madison Square Boys and Girls Club Project Graduate Program.

The Project Graduate Program, of which Devron Wilson is an alumnus, is a college prep program that prepares high school seniors for college by exposing them to resume writing and job interview workshops and facilitating college campus tours. The program also hosts an annual retreat to “ Project Graduate University ” where students are placed in a university setting with scheduled classes and extracurricular activities, all while living in a dormitory-style environment.  The Westchester Graduate Chapter teamed up with the Project Graduate Program to offer the Westchester Graduate Chapter of Groove Phi Groove College Textbook Scholarship in 2006 and 2008.

Most recently, on July 20, 2008, the Westchester Graduate Chapter of Groove Phi Groove presented its College Textbook Scholarship Award for 2008 to Jelani Worrell of Brooklyn, New York.  Mr. Worrell is a B+ average-student who plans to attend Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York, in the fall.  Jonathan Parker, the 2006 College Textbook Scholarship Award winner, is doing well as a sophomore at Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York.

The college textbook scholarship program has been so successful that the Westchester Graduate Chapter plans to make it an annual event. The chapter hopes to offer multiple scholarship awards to several students from various non-profit organizations across the New York Tri-State area.
